Security guard in a local pawnshop in Manila teaches street children amidst lockdown

John Robert Flores managed to photograph a security guard in a Palawan Pawnshop branch near Manila’s Arellano University – in action teaching street children on how to read and write and posted it on Facebook last May 27, 2020.

Rene Abelita, the security guard who was seen teaching street children garnered the approval and praise of many concerned netizens despite government’s directive to avoid face to face classes during these trying times brought by the coronavirus disease in the Philippines.
Flores wrote: “Napadaan kami sa Palawan Pawnshop sa Arellano University and spotted si Kuyang security guard na tinuturuan nyang magbasa at magsulat yung bata. Nakakaproud lang kasi kahit di nya kaano-ano but still tinuruan nya pa rin kasi may busilak siyang puso. I salute you Kuyang SG!  Sana patuloy ka pa rin bigyan ng blessings ni Lord dahil sa mabuting at busilak [mong] puso para matulungan [ang mga bata].”
The Facebook post also reached the Mission Possible, a public service program of ABS-CBN hosted by Julius Babao. In an interview with Abelita, he added that it is his motive to extend his hand in helping out-of-school children due to the coronavirus pandemic or those whose families cannot afford their children to go to school.

Abelita was rewarded by the program with two sacks of rice, pack of hygiene essentials, tray of fresh eggs and coverage payment for the renewal of his license on being a security guard.
